Our Engine Replacement Process
Since we opened in 1983, we've removed, repaired, and replaced thousands of engines. We've got this down to a science!
- Removal — We carefully remove your engine from your vehicle. Our facility includes everything we need to handle and replace an engine, and we have room to store your vehicle safely while we perform the work.
- Disassembly — We completely disassemble your engine, including making note of any problematic areas in the engine block, crankshaft, or cylinder heads.
- Cleaning — We use a variety of techniques and tools to remove the grease, oil, and dirt from your engine. For some parts, we use a large oven that literally bakes the grease off the engine block and cylinder heads.
- Inspection — We go over every part and carefully inspect it for flaws. We use a process called magnafluxing that combines a magnetic field with a special powder to reveal cracks that are not visible to the naked eye. By spotting these cracks, we eliminate the risk of wasting time and effort machining a damaged item. If the damage is spotted, we can usually save it with a special repair. When all the parts pass inspection, we move them on to machining.
- Machining — We remove a small amount of material from the engine block, cylinder heads, connecting rods, and crankshaft. This ensures that the engine's clearances will be within tolerance. Some parts require special machining.
- Decking — We reduce the risk of head gasket failure by machining the surfaces of the engine block and cylinder head to remove warped or uneven surfaces.
- Flywheel resurfacing — Clutches in manual transmissions often require flywheel resurfacing to create a smooth surface and reduce clutch chatter.
- Flat mating surfacing — Engine accessories that have a tendency to warp or wear occasionally need additional machining to make them mate with adjoining parts correctly.
- Stud and flange repair — If studs are broken or flanges are cracked, we can repair them.
- Reassembly — Once all the parts have been properly machined, we reassemble your engine, including any necessary gaskets and lubrication.
- Reinstallation — We put the completed engine back into your vehicle.
